Them patriarchal classical languages had to go

Greek. And then the level of theology drops as well. Mostly because you can’t make girls cry. There is correlation.
women began being admitted to these schools. It is not a matter of being “mean” or this being an “unworthy” thing to look at, but rather these types of things are essential to grasp to understand what is happening in our society and why. And I am not just pulling this out of my rear. Actual research has been done tracking this.

This is one very salient reason that the ancient liturgy and piety of the West must be restored, and hitherto vociferously defended.

Most of my prayer for four years now has been in Latin, and I am beginning to pray extemporaneously, if briefly and haltingly, in our universal ancestral tongue. It is more beautiful, more mysterious than English, it sets my discourse with God apart, in the most sacred precinct of my mind and heart.

Studying languages as academic subjects is almost useless, you have to begin communicating with them for essential reasons, for sake of felt need and desire, for them to take true hold of you. They take best when the communication involves love, friendship, sex, other atavistic desires and needs..

And there is no need more atavistic than the love and adoration of our God.

Forget the pagan poets. Pick up the Vulgate and learn to pray it. That will make your Latin take, and take fast.

As an amateur linguist, one of my deepest regrets was never having had the opportunity to take either Greek or Latin in school. Knowledge of both would have made my early adult life a lot easier in certain respects.

Unfortunately, the Classical Education ship has sailed. Can anyone seriously picture the majority of what passes for today’s high school students, who can’t even function in their own native language, becoming fluent in ancient ones? The very idea is laughable.

One of the specialized high schools here in NYC, where students are only admitted based on getting an A in a city wide aptitude exam, is called Brooklyn Latin, and 4 years of Classical Latin is mandatory, as it is in several of the more elite Catholic high schools in the city.

My son was admitted to Brooklyn Latin, but we chose a school closer to home that was equally as rigorous, but not requiring Latin.

The point being, Latin and Greek are making a comeback among elite prep schools, but the children that attend are unusually bright, and capable of excelling at that type of course work.

Expecting your average American teenager to study Latin or Greek is, at this point, almost out of the question.

I’m a girl, and I took Latin and Greek. (Of course everyone told me I was crazy, but whatever…)

Both of our homeschooled kids (two youngest) have taken several years of Latin at their hybrid school. Now…it wasn’t optional, so I don’t know that they would have done so in a regular school where high schoolers have choices, but we didn’t give them one, and they’re better for it.

Which brings to another sidebar, and PSA: If you look into a Christian “classical” school that does not offer either Latin or Greek as required language classes at the high school level (and they need to take it all 4 years), it is NOT a classical school. They’re using the term to trick you and rope you in for the tuition money, LOL.
