Radical egalitarianism is a Straussian ideological commitment

10 May

Different people are not equal in ability or worth.

Belief that they are can only spring from an ideological commitment to such a proposition, regardless of what one observes empirically.

It actually is true that each human life has an equally inherent dignity by virtue of being Imago Dei. This is what used to be the understanding of “all men are created equal”. I don’t think anyone ever thought that a lay-about was equally valuable to a productive, hard working citizen, or that a whore is equally valuable to a pious wife.

This really isn’t an either/or. What it boils down to is the modernist obsession with doing away with the very concepts of “good, better, best” or “bad, worse, worst”. Because if all choices are equally valid, then all people are equally valuable, and all cultures are equally dignified, then “How dare you imply otherwise you bigot? You’re no better than me!” Even though, objectively speaking, I really am better than some people and others are better than me. Have you ever seen Voddie Baucham’s exposition of the reality of some cultures being inherently better than others? It’s not long (I think 1/2 hour), but the video makes the point quite well:

Yes, we’re all equally sinful, and equally damned unless saved.

That’s the only sense in which equality is real.

Haven’t seen that, look forward to doing so later. Baucham is one of the few prominent pastors I respect.

Still grappling with commie crap almost 200 years later?

Manboons is not a learning animal.

Equality of results for all only happens at the firing squad wall.

As fab Freddy Nietzsche said, none are more inferior than those who insist on being equal. [para]

I don’t throw out Fab Freddy just because he was mad at God for things man has done.

To hell with some world where everyone is equal and the same.

To the gallows with all Jacobins.
