Once again, trying to prove George Santayana right.

Refresh my memory, fuzzy; what did he say?

“Those who don’t study history are condemned to repeat it.”

It must be true that “the Old South” is dead and gone, because “Old Southerners” wouldn’t have put up for a microsecond with vibrants and vagrants destroying monuments to their heritage. If the Old South still existed, the first time anyone ever tried to remove or deface a monument to Marsh Robert, Nathan Bedford Forrest, or P.T. Beauregard, there would have been burning corpses strung up from every nearby tree and buzzard fodder littering the cities’ streets. That this hasn’t happened tells me that it’s too late to stop the destruction.

I begin to believe that we may have judged the KKK too harshly. David Duke is probably shaking his head somewhere saying “I warned y’all that this would happen, but you didn’t want to hear it.”

      feeriker,
It may be that the Old South is gone. It has passed from living memory. All that we know is from books and other media. To my grandmother, it was something fought in her grandparents’ time and she could talk to someone who lived through it.
I don’t want to think about the irreplaceable things lost.
We may not have judged the KKK harshly enough. They promote hate. If the Confederacy was about anything racial, it was about acceptance. That is acceptance of all except Yankees.
