Yes. But today, I am celebrating our Dominion, our heritage, our land despite the usurpers and thieves. Screw ’em. Just because I dislike our government doesn’t mean I hate our country; on the contrary, I still love it.

Canada was founded, culturally and legally, by two counter-revolutionary peoples: the French of the Royalist regime who were spared the 1789 revolution and the United Empire Loyalists who rejected the 1776 revolution. If we take our fore-bearers’ vision seriously, we are heirs to the Peaceable Kingdom under the sovereignty of Christ and his authority as manifested in Christian monarchy.
The word dominion means legitimate authority and the preservation of legitimate authority lay at the heart of the 1867 union. John A. MacDonald wrote to Queen Victoria after the Westminster conference that the title “dominion” was “a tribute to the principles they [the fathers] earnestly desired to uphold.”
An original name for the Ottawa River is the Gitchissippi, an Algonquin word for the “great river.” The River referenced in Psalm 72 is the great river of the Euphrates and regards David’s dream of divine mandate. I like to think that Leonard Tilley, the father of confederation who reference this passage from scripture, unwittingly gave Canadians an alternative version of ‘manifest destiny’. This country’s ultimate role is to show case dominion – legitimate authority, order and decency – from the banks of the Ottawa to all the world.
For several generations saying this in Canada would not have been considered odd or radical. We once fought valiantly for the greater good. Unfortunately, our elites since the 1960s have been thoroughly immersed in French philosophical and American technocratic ideas and ideals. As George Grant pointed out years ago, we have been betrayed from within.
Get rid of the Laurentian consensus and their proxies and we still might have a way forward. Pray and work for a restoration. Miracles have been known to happen.

Yes, George Grant should be better known and appreciated by Canadians, but alas, “a prophet is not without honour, save in his own country and in his own house.” Grant’s insights in Lament for a Nation are as relevant today as they were when first written a half century ago. He was one philosopher who understood viscerally the merits of legitimacy and authority in western civilization. He continued to value throne and altar even amid contempt by fellow academics. A High Anglican he took umbrage with a church that by his latter years couldn’t defend human life enough to speak out against abortion. He espoused ‘order and decency’. He saw drift and delinquency. Sadly the degeneration continues .

I agree with Chesterton that saying ‘My country, right or wrong’ is akin to saying, ‘My mother, drunk or sober’ – but you still love your mother, even if you’re embarrassed because she’s a drunk; you still love her and wish her well, do what you can if you can to help her…
