It actually looks like a fairly accurate map. Today in the US news, Obama’s trying to look internationally important by searching for missing girls in Africa; the NFL announced its first (openly) gay player; and a bunch of millionaire basketball players are trying to remove their own because he said something privately that they found ‘insensitive.’

Somehow, I doubt Putin sees America as ‘the land of the free and home of the brave’ very much either.

Hah! How did I only just now notice this post?

Where is Cyprus? I am not good with maps. 🙂 Is it the dot next to tamed Muslims?

Click on the picture, and look at the bottom right corner, indeed, the island right below Turkey (‘tamed Muslims’) – it says ‘Piggy-Bank’. 🙂

Is Cyprus a banking centre? Why did they figure Putin would view it as a ‘piggy-bank’?

Ahh, this is stuff I do not know a lot about. But many people say, that Russian oligarchs were using Cyprus as a tax haven. There was a lot of dirty under the table things going on, and Cyprus was notorious for it.

That is why last year when we had our big bank crisis here, everybody was very angry that it was Russian big guys doing the dirty work, and clean handed, honest Cypriots suffering and at a loss,
from the bank account hair cuts.

I think it is a dig at this that they call Cyprus the piggybank. Cyprus was a very popular place for big Oligarchs, as the tax and banking was so lax. Without getting too much into this, and boring you, there are places called “washing shops”, which are basically small shops with hardly any purpose, just to run the money through, and claim it was from there. Cyprus police was not cutting down on this kind of thing, as they could also benefit from it.

Most people view government here to be very corrupt, 2 days before the haircuts, huge sums of money were moved to Thai and other foreign banks by people in government, and by Russians who were banking here. And it was the small business owners, and regular people who suffered. 😦 Sad.

So, as I am sure you can imagine, most are not very fond of Putin at the moment, as we feel as allies to us, and a fellow Orthodox country, he should have helped us, especially since it was his own countries citizens who had caused the bloating in Cyprus banks. However, he did not. There was nothing in it for him, and Russia.
