This is quite unfortunate. I really like Hobby Lobby and default to them first because they are (were?) a Christian company.
Shoot…

Jesus was indeed a refugee when the Holy Family fled to Egypt to escape Herod the Great who wanted Jesus dead. There is nothing in this fact to support the conclusion that those who make “Jesus was a refugee” ads want us to draw from this, i.e., that we are under some sort of obligation to accept the all the economic migrants falsely claiming to be refugees.
As I read the New Testament Jesus was a refugee for less than a month. According to St. Luke’s Gospel the Holy Family returned to Nazareth after Jesus was presented in the Temple on the 40th day after His birth (the event commemorated on Candlemas, which we just celebrated, on 2 February, 40 days after Christmas). The same Gospel tells us that His Circumcision took place on the day assigned by the Mosaic Law (the eighth – commemorated on New Year’s Day, the eight day after Christmas). Jesus was therefore still in the vicinity of Jerusalem on the eight day after His birth and was there again on the fortieth day before His family returned to Nazareth. The Magi found Him in Bethlehem, according to St. Matthew’s Gospel, and then both fled Herod, the Magi returning home by an alternate path, the Holy Family going into Egypt. The Visit of the Magi is traditionally commemorated on the sixth of January, Epiphany as it was known before the Americans redubbed it Insurrection Day. This falls shortly after the commemoration of the Circumcision and a little under a month before Candlemas. This corresponds with what we can deduce from the Scriptural text. The best place to put the Visit of the Magi, the Flight into Egypt, and the Return is in the thirty-two days between Jesus’ Circumcision and His Presentation. If you date the Visit of the Magi later, as evangelicals often due based entirely upon speculation from the two years old and upper of Herod’s slaughter of the Innocents, undue speculation considering that Herod went after the Innocents in all the towns around Bethlehem as well and was obviously being excessive, then you need an explanation as to why the Holy Family was back in Bethlehem.
This does not, of course, take away from Jesus having been a refugee. If someone flees for their life and finds sanctuary somewhere else they are a refugee whether it is for a month or a decade. However, the Holy Family returned to Palestine at the earliest possible opportunity when God let them know that Herod was dead. That is typical of true refugees. They return home when it is safe to do so. It is not typical of pseudo-refugee economic migrants seeking to be free riders in another society.
Incidentally, since we know from Josephus that Herod’s death took place early in the year before the Passover this lends support to the traditional dates of Christmas, the Circumcision, Epiphany, Presentation, etc. as being at least approximately correct.
