A Mari Usque Ad Mare; Desiderantes Meliorem Patriam

01 Jul

Ruler Supreme, Who hearest humble prayer,
Hold our dominion in Thy loving care.
Help us to find, O God, in Thee
A lasting, rich reward,
As waiting for the Better Day,
We ever stand on guard.

Google is my friend and my Latin is very rusty.
A mare ad mare is the national motto of Canada.
Desiderantes meliorum patriam is to be found on this decoration.

I have heard that Canada has one order that is hereditary. It belongs to the descendants of refugees from the American Revolution. Google could not help me there.

Isn’t it A Mari Usque Ad Mare, eh? Pretty sure I’ve heard that somewhere.

Happy Canada Day,Will, and may you never get a celebration of Junefifteenth to add to it, being four days before ours.

    Happy Dominion Day, Will S.

And continue to fly the Red Ensign proudly and sing ‘The Maple Leaf Forever.’

Thanks Thomas; and Happy Dominion day to you, too, my likely-distant-‘cousin’ (Henderson) and Canadian! 🙂

Absolutely, as I have done here other years, displayed the Red Ensign and the lyrics to the Maple Leaf Forever.

This last verse of O Canada, above, is the only one I truly like strongly. It is more a hymn than an anthem, after all. 🙂

The last verse is the one I prefer as well. After all a national anthem is an anthem, a hymn.

True, good point, anthems are hymns.

Btw, I love the motto for Canada. A mari usque ad amare, “from sea to sea” is from Psalm 72,8, “He shall have dominion also from sea to sea and from the great river unto the ends of the earth.” The fathers of confederation thought this passage from a messianic psalm a worthwhile aspiration for a young Christian country. Fittingly, another name for the Ottawa River is the ‘Kitchissippi’ which means the ‘great river’.

We desire a better country is taken from Hebrews 11.16: “Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.” We are to seek the higher things, the nobler things, the heavenly things – Truth, goodness, excellence, virtue, love – in all that we do.

The word holy means “set apart”. Both mottoes imply that our fair Dominion is holy enterprise. “God save our Queen and heaven bless, the maple leaf forever!”

I would have left this on your comment thread, but it is political. To hell with those wannabe authoritarians! They’re not Canada!

Happy (Belated) Canada Day, Will. I spent yesterday putting Mom to rest, so wasn’t able to pass on my usual greetings. Hopefully a joyous celebration was had by all IP north, despite current conditions.

Hey feeriker, thanks! I totally understand; pardon the too-contemporary phrasing, but I hope you have some kind of closure from that, and I pray you will not have too much challenges in working out the estate issues, notwithstanding your problematic SIL.

I did have an enjoyable Canada Day weekend, visiting family and friends, seeing big-scale hometown fireworks, and relaxing at a small lake with food, bevvies, fireworks from the dock, and swimming, laughing kids, board games, etc. The way a summer long weekend in Canada should be. 🙂

I just saw this from Ottawa. Who do I complain to? Justin? If this is how he wants his nation’s birthday celebrated, he will stumble into his own Lexington and Concord.

I couldn’t tell what the police were there to do beyond picking a fight.

They were there on JT’s and the mayor’s orders, of course.

I heard a bit about it, but I was trying not to pay too much attention.

I guess the orders were to create an incident if the protesters did not create one.
Justin is a classic narcissist. I really am surprised this has gone on as long as it has.

I just saw this and I thought it was nice that the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is accessible to the public. It isn’t at Arlington.
