Yes, and this is the exact plan with lab-grown meat. I understand the ethics of people who like meat but hate having an animal die for it.
The book Sacred Cow-was written to undermine this a bit. First, they point out that only one life is ended when we kill a cow, and many are fed by its dense, B12-loaded protein. By contrast, when we plow a field to grow crops, dozens or hundreds of lives are necessarily ended, even if not explicitly. If you oppose killing animals for food, carnivore beats field-crop-eater every day of the week.
The second point is that the process of growing cattle is pretty simple, and the mechanism of reproduction is basically free. By contrast, the lab-grown meat will be 5-10 times as expensive to produce because the process is controlled by patents that the people pushing lab meat own. And then I saw the scam.
