And this is why we instead have charities to help the homeless, etc.

Don’t give to panhandlers. Don’t be a chump. Donate to charity, instead.

“Xavier Israel” is only doing what the government does with impunity.

I’ve given to women before. One had an older boy with her and was trying to get a hotel room. We bought a pregnant African American mom breakfast at McDonald’s in South Carolina. LoL I bought her like half the menu- lots of protein for baby. I found $20 on the sidewalk and gave it to a woman looking to buy diapers for her baby. One homeless woman had the nerve to ask my wife for cigarette money – nope – I guess you gotta admire her honesty.

I’ve given to men before but not in a long time. They hang out at freeway exits here. At least some of them live nearby and just do it to make money. My wife saw one of them who panhandles outside the supermarket, with a huge wad of cash buying a ton of lottery tickets.

I almost never see women begging; only men. At street corners. I once gave my burger to a guy begging, and he took it. But I don’t like it; don’t trust most. Drunks and druggies.

I agree most are men and most probably want it for drugs. I am more likely to be sympathetic to women but I guess they can sucker you too.

The black preggo woman in South Carolina – areas of that state are very poor and she asked for food not money right away.

We used to work a food pantry/church thrift store. Some genuine poor, some would show up in expensive cars for their handout.

There are all kinds of homeless people. Some of them will be violent, but as for theft, they are homeless. Where would they put the items they would choose to steal? I think that most of them live in the moment with needs that are immediate and simple.

There are a lot of people out there living on the edge financially. With rent half your take home, you are only two paychecks away from being on the street. It hit me hard when I heard about a waitress at Denny’s who worked graveyard getting laid off and ending up there. Then, there was the daughter of a prominent builder who took a second out on her house and out lived her money. She lasted a week. I heard about it after the fact. I think the sober ones can bounce back.

I know there indeed are some in that boat.

But at least here, there are organizations, esp. church run charities, that will help get people off the street if they want to.

Many don’t, either because addicts or mentally ill.

If a fast food restaurant is near by, my husband will buy them a meal. We almost never give money. Occasionally, butit’s rare. A woman asked me to buy her some food recently and I did.

One thing that really annoys me, actually, is when I see whole families (man, woman, kids in strollers) standing at corners with signs. I recoil inwardly mainly because I know that there is not a homeless shelter near our community so these people spend their nights somewhere. Every restaurant in the area is hiring, so why is he out here? I know that they can’t live well on $15 an hour, but most times they’re not married. He can work, she can get food stamps, etc.

All that to say I have grown extremely cynical, and I don’t like that about myself but there it is.

A friend of mine treated a homeless guy to a meal at a restaurant once, and talked with him. Said friend of mine is a non-believer, too, I should add; made me think, I should try to be as generous…

I am cynical or skeptical, at least, much of the time. Rightly or wrongly…
