It would be kind of funny if no one cared or watched.

I think that’s extraordinarily likely to be what actually happens. People have had enough.

    “Black Girl Magic”

I notice that they’re putting Dominique Dawes on center stage as a commentator on women’s gymnastics. To the best of my recollection, she was a very much less than spectacular athlete in both Beijing and London (did she even win a bronze metal?). Yet now she’s being hailed as some kind of hero in the sport whose commentary will be taken as sage wisdom.

And Simone Biles is special for being so short without having dwarfism, not for being Black. A White girl who is otherwise similar should be able to perform comparably in gymnastics, and anyone much above 4’8″ would run out of space on those floor routines.

Dawes won a gold at some point. It was a very big deal in black media at the time. Mid-90s, maybe? Former athletes who have accomplished far less become commentators all the time..Shrug.

For me, the more problematic idea is the one of “black girl magic”. I used to cringe every time I heard it, mainly because the people who would say it were far less than magical.

What a lot of people don’t know is that the mostly benign phrase springs from an increasing embrace of the “dark feminine” among black women. The latter is ANYTHING but benign.
