Syphilis is an example of a disease that was very virulent and evolved to a less virulent form. The reason was those lesions: they signaled to others that the person had syphilis, so he or she would not gain new partners and conquests. By contrast, a less-damaging form of the disease did not cause the systemic effects and so did not warn new partners that the person had syphilis. So less-virulent syphilis spread more quickly than more virulent.
Something similar will likely happen with COVID.
