I never thought of it that way. What will BLM and Antifa do?

They have tried to get American Indians to join with them in solidarity; perhaps they will target Indigenous Hawaiians.

They have done well in Canada, or so it seems on the surface. While they were barricading trains, it seemed like there were two set of Indians, one that was in favor of this , and one that wasn’t. I don’t know about Hawaii.

Natives in Canada comprise only 2% or so, IIRC, of our total population, but they became militant around 1990 – look up the Oka Crisis – and have remained so ever since, and nobody in politics here has the guts to politically oppose them. So they punch well above their weight.

They won’t secede. They can’t. They need us way more than we need them. If they leave, we lose some pineapples and a decent vacation spot, but they lose easy access to everything they can’t produce on their tiny islands. Gas, milk, internet, TV, protection from the Japanese empire, everything.

Well, somehow, other Pacific Island countries manage fine…

They may be poorer, but they exist, from Tonga to Vanuatu, and more…

They don’t grow pineapples anymore. Native Hawaiians aren’t “lazy,” they just don’t get with the idea of hard work, living in paradise and all. So the island of Lanai, with all the pineapple plantations, had the question put to a vote. The people voted to turn it into a resort island, because working in a resort is FAR preferable to harvesting pineapples.

As an independent country (maybe asking China to extend the nuclear umbrella) they’d be poorer but still pretty well off.

Having U.S. territory in the middle of the Pacific is a huge increase in territorial/international waters…

        Asset or liability?

Sure, you get some mahi-mahi fish, but then you have more territory to defend… 😉
