Last Chance U removes gym scales because ‘triggering’ to eating disorder sufferers

13 Mar

A couple decades back, Carleton University in Ottawa was widely known as ‘Last Chance U’, because people who couldn’t get in to any other Ontario universities could reliably get into that school. Harsh, but justified, IMO.

Seems like they want to be mocked and ridiculed some more, given this:

Carleton Athletics has decided to remove the scale from the gym.

A sign where the scale used to be stated it was removed to encourage people to focus on other ways of measuring their health beyond just their weight.

The sign stated the decision to remove the scale is “in keeping with current fitness and social trends.”

Bruce Marshall, manager of health and wellness at Athletics, said focusing only on weight can have a negative impact.

“We don’t believe being fixated on weight has any positive affect on your health and well-being,” Marshall said in an email. “The body is an amazing machine and even when we are dieting and training it will often find a homeostasis at a certain weight.”

Marshall added it can take a long time to see a change in weight.

“It takes weeks, even months to make a permanent change in your weight. So why obsess about it?” he said. “Why not look at other indicators?”

According to Marshall, other indicators to look at include girth measurements, which can change “dramatically,” without much of a weight change. This involves measuring the circumference of areas such as the torso, legs, and arms to record progress.

He added people can also set goals in terms of cardiovascular fitness and overall strength, instead of only focusing on the number on the scale.

Blah blah blah; bullshit; here’s the real reason:

“Scales are very triggering,” she said. “I think people [who disagree with taking it out] are being insensitive because they simply don’t understand. They think eating disorders are a choice when they are actually a serious illness.”

Incredible…

People have rightly ridiculed and poked fun at the decision:

In online forums, the reaction was not exactly sympathetic. “Great policy,” one wrote. “Next up, ban calculators because I’m flunking calculus and seeing them triggers me.”

Another said the scale “had it coming” because it was a terrible liar. One suggested the centre should also ban mirrors.

Others lamented the loss, calling the scale “a useful tool.”

“No one is forced to step on a scale, just like no one is forced to use the squat rack. It’s an unfortunate decision to remove a useful tool that all gyms should have.”

Way to go, Last Chance U.

I went to Carleton in the early 90’s. Even then the Campus was run by the GLBT society. I absolutely hated it there.

I dropped out and went to a local community college to learn a tradde instead. Much more enjoyable experience.

Ottawa U wasn’t any better, either, when I was there in the early 90s; just as lousy with those activists… I, too, hated it, and also ended up dropping out, and also ended up at a community college acquiring more practical skills, then later finished my degree elsewhere, at a smaller school with more individual attention from the profs and admin; also very P.C. (like every uni from then and since), but still superior in all the ways that counted. 🙂

No, but I have lived in Ottawa a few different times, for school and work. 🙂

I am from eastern Ontario, though. 🙂

I can see stepping on a scale being “triggering” if said scale bellowed out “HEYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!! GOD DAMMIT, YOU GUYS, GET OFF OF ME! ONE GUY AT A TIME, PLEASE!!!!!”

Otherwise, it’s just an inanimate farking machine, ferfarkssake. As “Aaron Bens” was kind enough to point out, something grownups should already be aware of and not need pointed out to them: if what the scale is going to show you will surely offend/upset you, just DON’T STEP ON THE DAMN THING (AND RISK BREAKING IT AND CALLING EVEN MORE ATTENTION TO YOUR INSECURITIES).

Yo, exactly. What about the other 98% who need the scale?

It’s likely that they weren’t “triggered”* by the scale — it’s just that the scale wasn’t showing what they wanted to see; and these SJW types are interested only in what THEY want.
Sorry, but only FEW people can lose weight without effort (and I’m not one of them, either) — sorry, but it takes EFFORT and WORK, i.e., dieting and exercise to lose weight. Even people who have had gastric bypass surgery regain their weight because they don’t/won’t change their habits (I’ve seen it happen).

      * I HATE sloppy, weak language that these PC weaklings come up with to justify their juvenile sensitivities.

Yeah, a buddy of mine went under the knife for one of them there gastric bands; didn’t work in the long run, couldn’t help eating and drinking as much as he wanted to, despite his shrunken stomach… Eventually had to have it removed. Oops!

I do not have a bathroom scale. I use the one at the gym and get a grin at least several times a week because i lost a pound. If I lost a pound, how much am I gaining in muscle? This is gross stupidity and neglecting the many because of the few. Eating is a mental disorder, yep, and each time I tried to stop I suffered severe withdrawal. Because of too much hospital time and no vehicle, I topped 300. One week just swimming, and it’s at that now, and falling. Stay away from the carbs, and you’ll lose the loser-ism. Eat like a Native American should, low carbs, but lots of mean, no gluten!, plenty of fruit and veggies, honeyed carrots, low dairy but butter. I love Native American cooking. If it ain’t deep fried, is it food? And my doctor is going bald from hair-pulling because the LDL is consistently low, sugar is good to great, HDL now getting back to good because of the pool. NO GLUTEN, more energy and a new vehicle make the gym great again. I love that freekin scale. It makes me smile.

Hey man, glad to hear you’re on the downward trend, weight-wise! Keep it up, bro! You can do it. 🙂

I’ve heard of people doing well on native-themed diets; whatever works for you! 🙂

Remember when the purpose of education was to make yourself stronger, more rational, more moral and more immune to being ‘triggered’?

Education was about toughening up intellectually and morally, so that you can handle reality.

Now its about someone else subsidizing your illusions, and paying for you to avoid reality.

What a joke. It will lead to MORE suffering, not less.

Play-Doh and crayons didn’t cut it I guess.

Maybe I can capitolize on this,, and make a scale that you first type in the amount you wish you weighed before stepping on it.

Gotta get a patent attorney on the phone…

I just realized what’s next: they’re going to ban those: “Guess your weight!” folks at county fairs; too ‘triggering’, doncha know. Never mind that you pay them to guess…

Now I know why God puts mankind through suffering. Our fallen flesh needs it to even function. We are no longer fit for Eden even if we manage to get back in.

Stare at how ease makes the trivial significant.

So, breaking that scale is going to help that heifer lose weight?
She should drop the carbs and be more active instead.
Oh, yes, I’m being “oppressive” and “patriarchal” by being logical instead of being “sensitive” to “her feelz”.

She probably never had a chance to step on the scale. As soon as it saw her approach, it shrieked “OH, HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLL NO!!!!” and self-destructed in order to avoid getting crushed.

I’m a very, very (to an autistic fault [though I’m not]) analytical, cold person and I rarely let emotion cloud my views and reactions and this is a very alienating quality to possess today 😦
