Musical Interlude: Bruce Springsteen covers

13 Nov

I heard these on SiriusXM’s Outlaw Country channel recently; apparently both are part of a tribute album that came out in September, all covers of songs from Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Born in the U.S.A.’ album, thirty years after its release.

I like this straight-ahead, southern-fried version of ‘My Hometown’, but I especially love this new, sombre arrangement of ‘Born in the U.S.A.’ (apparently taken from the quite different demo version); I think this captures the atmosphere of Springsteen’s lyrics far better than Springsteen’s released version, which mistakenly got taken as a celebratory, patriotic anthem, when in fact it is anything but that.

Can’t make that mistake with this version; the tune and the tone go better with the lyrics, IMO.
