Don’t forget that Orwell was a middle-class Marxist. He may have condemned the extremities of all forms of totalitarianism, but like most Marxists and other leftists he would be prepared to make exceptions to how information was gathered and used, if the purpose fitted in with his idea of the “greater good”.

I know. Doesn’t matter; he did and stood for the right thing when and where it counted most. So today, we recognize him for the good he did and stood for, setting aside the ill.

Yes, he did make a positive contribution.

And he also ratted out enemies of the British state to the government, same as Elia Kazan ratted out anti-Americans to the House Un-American Activities Committee; and as Kazan, lost friends in doing so.

I suppose you mean members of the British Union of Fascists, but most of them were at least as patriotic as Orwell. Their units were staunch at Dunkirk, but Orwell just did cushy guard duty during WWII.

No, I meant some of his fellow writers with pro-Soviet leanings.

At least, that’s my understanding, though IIRC correctly, he waited till after they’d died to release that info, but made it known what he was going to do, to leave them in suspense, annoyed and worrying, and unable to do a damn thing. 🙂

Joe McCarthy has been badly maligned. The leftists would be embarrassed and in denial that Orwell was prepared to work with him, just as they try to deny that Lincoln believed blacks and whites should be segregated.

        Indeed.
